PROPOSED HONG KONG REGISTER OF SHIPPING

As agreed after this morning's meeting with representatives of the Chamber of Shipping and the British Shipping Federation, I attach a draft interim reply reporting the present state of play to the Prime Minister. Mr Denholm undertook to write to the Minister on a number of issues to which the Chamber attach special importance and Mr Rice-Oxley is to provide us with information about the number of UK registered ships which employ Hong Kong ratings. We are, as you know, still awaiting a reply from the Governor of Hong Kong to the proposals in our consultative document and if these have not reached us by tomorrow perhaps a further reminder should be sent.
