(c) Tai Lam (Women) - 116

Tai Lam was opened in November 1958, Ma Po Ping in January 1972 and Women's Centre of Tai Lam in November 1969. The Prisons Department have provision in categories B and C of the Public Works Programme for two more centres, each with a capacity for approximately 600.

7.

Up to the end of 1968 (during the experimental period) admissions to Tai Lam numbered 17,501. Between then and 31st March 1973 they were 3,278 whilst total admissions to Ma Po Ping have been 947 and to Tai Lam (Women) 169. The overall total has thus been 21,895. The average period of time an addict now spends in Tai Lam is eight months (it used to be shorter, but was lengthened in the light of experience); in Ma Po Ping, which deals primarily, but not entirely, with relapsed addicts who have undertaken a programme of treatment previously, it is ten to twelve months; while at the Tai Lam Women's Centre it is eight months. So far as men are concerned therefore, and these form by far the greatest proportion of addicts, the Prisons Department can turn over approximately 1,600 per year on the present basis
