1. Mr Royle may be interested to see the Governor's light-
hearted despatch about the first Arts Festival in Hong Kong
which took place recently.
2. It is encouraging to hear that the performances succeeded
in attracting a high proportion of Chinese in the audiences.
A happy by-product of the Festival was the donation of funds
to build a Hong Kong Arts Centre. It now looks as though
this can be built within a couple of years.
3. We have also received a report about the Festival from
the Senior British Trade Commissioner. Special funds were
provided to enable the British Council and the Trade Commission
jointly to host one of the major receptions of the Festival,
a supper party for 180 people including 90 artists from the
Bristol Old Vic, the London Philarmonic Orchestra and the
London Ballet. Mr Aston hopes that it will be possible to
give similar support to the 1974 and 1975 festivals.
