HONG KONG: MR ALAN ELLIS

B

10/8

Ellis telephoned me at 1230 hours today suggesting that

we might meet for lunch sometime next week when he would give me some more information on the Hong Kong scene.

2. When I informed him that I would be away early next week in Yorkshire and Cheshire visiting overseas police officers on training courses, he said I should know that there were rumours circulating in Hong Kong that a British TV Unit was planning a "confrontation" with the Commissioner of Folice, Mr Sutcliffe, with Ellis in attendance. Ellis said that he personally had no intention in participating in such a plan and that, when this was made public, he intended to state firmly that he would have nothing to do with it and that there was no personal animus, least of all against Sutcliffe, whom he admired, in his allegations of corruption in the Police Force.

3. He added that he was in touch with a number of British TV Units amongst whom there were some which were planning feature inquiries into various aspects of the Hong Kong scene, outside the activities of the Police Force. He would not divulge what subjects would be scrutinised by the media.
