I noticed from newspaper reports that you had met
a Hong Kong felegation in London, headed by
is well respected by some members of the Government here, but that is no doubt because he always supports the Government (when the issue does not affect his own interests), and gives the impression of being a steady man. This kind f man would be a collaborator no matter who ruled Hong Kong, British, Japanese or anyone else, since their interests lie only in their
wn profit.
I am alarmed that
wants more people t
to
work in restaurants. I would be careful of such persons, in case the they als carry on the rug trade. Getting people to London could als. become a profitable racket, if applicants believed that
had power to speak for them.
We have quite a lot of Chans- men of that type in Hong Kong: the British call them friends of the Government and give them Queen's honours. The Chinese people call them by their proper name, exploiters and gangsters.
is accused by a Chinese friend
of mine
in the New Territories as receiving $6000 a month from gambling dens where he lives in the N.T.. This is handed to him, I am told, by the Senior Detective Inspector, who collects the money from the dens
⚫n the instruction ●f his superior officer.
You may not believe this. I do, and some day I am going to be able to show that Hong Kong is run by men of Godber's type (Not the present Governor, who is probably having a tough time).
ely believed to have obtained his own position through Anyone who knows the Hong Kong scene would not soubt it.
As to Gedber, he has brought a lot of suffering to a lot
of Chinese families, and should not be allowed to use his privileged position as an Englishman to get away with it. The Chinese people can not be expected to respect law and order if Godber is allowed to escape. And I for one will hesitate to pay my taxes if it goes to pensions and s on for such a criminals.
I am aware that you do not accept what I say. That does not make my words wrong, because what I say is the truth at the grass-roots level, a level never seen by you or the kind of people you talk to in Hong Kong.
Kon
However, whether or not you believe me is net t.. important. I am, however, concerned that drugs and other rackets should not be carried any further. I should also like to know why action is not taken to stop the killing of Chinese people in Hong Kon by drugs. Senior police have told me that the trade can be stopped within weeks. The only thing that prvents that action is the protection the trade is given at se high a level that even those senior police would lose their jobs if they attempted actions this information has been given to me directly by senior police.
I only ask you to beware of
Yours faithfully misu даря
