They have now gone by letter together with a cheque for one month's salary in lieu of notice and the solicitor's retainer. So, there should be no problem about legal representation. Other matters existing other friends and their wishes to keep can rest for a while and they can get briefed later. I am concerned to ensure that their innocent desire to be helpful does not get misconstrued by the gentlemen of the opposition - hence the solicitor.
David I think that is about it. My apologies firstly for not having the courtesy to say to you and Lindy that I proposed to leave and secondly for asking you to take on the onerous task of settling my affairs. You will never know how deeply I have appre- ciated the moral support of friends such as yourselves over the last week. I would not care to re-live them. What will now happen I do not know but my resignation (with cheque) is effective from yesterday. If it is refused then they must please themselves but I am no longer sadly a policeman because it is still a good Force. For now then all best wishes and love to Lindy. Many thanks for your support and endless kindnesses. Keep me posted and I will see you next year. All the best.
Yours aye
Peter.
