Killer smiles

as appeal

is thrown out

A · CONVICTED murderer smiled when his appeal against a death sentence was dismissed yesterday at the Supreme Court.

Lam Po, 29, told the Full Court comprising Chief Justice G.G. Briggs, Mr Justice A.M. McMullin and Mr Justice D. Cons that "the trial judge gave me a very fair sentence" when asked if he had anything to

say.

The Chief Justice said "since you do not have any ground for appeal, the appeal is dismissed."

When Lam heard this he smiled and nodded his head.

Lam was sentenced to be hanged within two years by Justice J.P. Trainor last month after a seven-man jury unanimously found him guilty of murdering a prison inmate.

Earlier, the court was told that Lam and the deceased, Lee Pui-ming, were Stanley prisoners

Lam was sent to Stanley Prison on conviction of arson and murder after setting fire to

premises in Connaught Road' Central which resulted in the death of 11 people in 1971.

He was originally sentenced to death, but the Governor commuted the sentence to 30 years imprisonment.

The court was told that at 5 pm on November 28, last year, about 40 Stanley inmates waiting to get into the dining hall, lined up outside Cell A on the ground floor.

Suddenly an inmate heard Lee screami Lee was seen stumbling a few steps with blood on his head and collapsed. Lam was seen stabbing Lee two or three times while Lee was on the ground.

Lee died of shock and bleeding.

During the trial, Lam had asked the judge to hang him.

He even asked the jury to sentence him to death, saying "I know I am useless.”
