Sr Arenales, the Guatemalan Foreign Minister, in New York on
28 July to discuss the possibility of reopening negotiations on
the dispute over Belize.

In a press interview on 24 July a Guatemalan ex-president,
Arevalo, stated that the only way to recover Belize was by
armed invasion. The Vice Foreign Minister later commented that
his Government were prepared to 'exhaust all peaceful methods to
reach a solution of this problem': he was hopeful that the
present peaceful situation would enable the British Government
to 'revalidate the rules of the game' permitting a return to
talks in the near future.

Death Sentences
Two men were convicted of murder and sentenced to death on
24 July. The presiding judge, Judge Adams, died of cardiac
trouble the same evening.
