We have been giving consideration to appointment
of Chief Justice if Roberts is not available. The re
is not an outside candidate. We had noted your
recommendation in your tel no 11 of 4 January of
Briggs, but in your Despatch of 4 August last you
included Huggins as a possible candidate. Your
Despatch compared Huggins with Roberts, but not with
Briggs. Your Despatch also excluded Blair-Kerr on
grounds of age. The Bar Association proposal,
therefore, may also bring him into the field again.
We would be grateful if you could let us have
your views on these two points, as well as on the
Bar Association proposal.
