I make no apology for most warmly commending it to anyone who is thinking of investing in Britain. And it already has several flourishing Chinese restaurants !
Witney's Rotary Club is small but active and like every other a wonderful place to meet everyone who matters in
the town. In my years in the Diplomatic Service I came
to have a great respect for your Movement and I am happy to be able to pay tribute to it to-day.
Mr. President, I am very proud to have been asked to lead this Mission from the London Chamber of Commerce & Industry to Japan and Hong Kong : a wonderful experience for me,
particularly as I have had no previous knowledge of this
immensely important region of the world. I can perhaps claim some fragmentary connection with the economic affairs
of Hong Kong. In the Foreign Office I was at the London
end of the Brussels negotiations of 1961-63 and I well
remember the passionate conviction with which my old friend Bill Gorell-Barnes always spoke up whenever Hong Kong's interests were in question. At UNCTAD I we had a very able member of the Hong Kong Administration on the U.K. Delegation
of which I was the official Leader. As Ambassador in Paris
I had more than once to address the French Government on
behalf of Hong Kong, which was then already providing a valuable market for French exports while its own exports to France were subject to severe restrictions. I remember with pleasure Mr. Hugh Barton's vigorous advocacy of Hong Kong's case and the visit to Paris of a strong Hong Kong Delegation
under the distinguished leadership of Sir Sik Nin Chau.
