1. The attached telex messages were exchanged between Accommodation Department and DEMOS Croydon and were the result of enquiries throughout the FCO and DTI as to the necessity for new offices in Hong Kong.
2.
Because of the marked lack of enthusiasm for Mr Aston's scheme revealed by our enquiries, we were unable to do more than state that it would be desirable to move to the Gammon building and PSA have not unreasonably said that Treasury were unlikely to approve the move.
3. In view of the above, and the cuts in expenditure on building and purchase that we are being asked to make, we in Accommo- dation and Services Department cannot press for a move from satisfactory offices to more satisfactory offices unless there are compelling reasons which have until now not been revealed to us.
