1. Mr Aston has sent me a copy of your letter of 14 December.
2. In conjunction with GIPD we, in this department, have been considering how best we can improve the projection of Britain in Hong Kong.
3. Whilst our main concern is over contentious issues which increasingly arise between HNG and the Hong Kong Government, we have had to accept that it would be wrong for the Trade Commission to take an opposing view to the Governor who is the queen's representative. There does appear however to be room for improving Britain's image in Hong Kong and this task can properly be undertaken in the Trade Commission. Whilst my view remains that most influential Hong Kong citizens and certainly the majority of businessmen road the English language press there is none the loss some importance in reaching the vast majority of the population who read the Chinese language papers. It follows that we would see advantage in the services of the translator being more readily available along the lines now proposed by Mr Aston.
4. You may wish to know that Sir P Reilly in his capacity as leader of a London Chamber of Commerce Mission to Hong Kong has written to the FUS and refer- red to the projection of Britain in the Colony. Sir T Brimelow has agreed that more could be done.
