TUSS ID had a word with me yesterday about the renewed pressure from the Knitting Industries' Federation for a decision on their application for quotas on imports of knitted outerwear and underwear from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Ho will bo discussing with the Minister ID but his inclination, unless the KIF could be informally persuaded to let the matter drop, is to turn the case down provided we judge that the prospects of our being required by the Community to introduce restraints on knitted textiles from Asia are not imminent.
2 I undertook to make a considered assessment, and would be grateful if you would let me have a short paper in consultation with our colleagues on the overseas side.

PUSS ID has now decided to write to the KIF on the lines of our recent draft, and I am to have an informal word with Mr Swann, the President, to suggest they will gain nothing by pressing. But we still need the assessment in case they do.
