British play fair with HK

SENIOR British trade official today lashed

"I absolutely reject such suggestions," said the Senior British Trade Commissioner in Hongkong, T. W. Aston.
Mr Aston also said that Britain enjoyed no monopoly in Hongkong and had to compete on merit for all its contracts, from building the tube to supplying litter bins.
No-one had taken advantage of Hongkong, he told a Kowloon · Lions Club lunch at the Peninsula Hotel.
Money from Britain, and many other countries, was attracted here because the market was highly attractive to any investor.

"Some of the money was sterling, perhaps a great deal of it was, but not all.
"Much must have come from Japan, the United States and Europe.
"And since sterling is an international currency much of it was in non-UK hands.
"At a stage some investors decided it was time to get out, either because they had some other, new profitable use for their money, or because they felt it was time to take their profits before the market turned down, or both.
"This is surely the law of the investment, or gambling, jungle.
