A day's visit by train to Bristol is being arranged.
BRISTOL (population nearly half a million) is a major port 116 miles (about 186 kilometres) west of London. (Immediate access to M4 and M5.) Grain, cocoa beans, petroleum, oilseeds, meat, cheese, feeding stuffs for livestock, wine and tobacco are notable imports. It is also the main centre of trade in the west of England. Its varied industries include aircraft, engineering, boots and shoes, paper making, tobacco, chocolate, chemicals, machinery, zinc smelting and food process- ing. Bristol covers 42 square miles (about 105 square kilometres). It is famous for its educational and cultural tradition. Since 1945 building activities have included over 45,000 dwellings, new factories, offices, schools, libraries, clinics and a new entertainment centre.

The HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT (comprising the House of Commons and the House of Lords) occupy the site of the Palace of Westminster, the principal residence of the Kings of England from the middle of the 11th century to 1512. The Palace was nearly all destroyed by fire in 1834 the only remains being Westminster Hall and the Crypt of St Stephen's Chapel. The present Houses (except for the Chamber of the House of Commons which was rebuilt after its destruction by air attack in 1941) were rede- signed by the architect Charles Barry soon after the fire; they cover some 8 acres (3.2 hectares).
