ELECTIONS TO HONG KONG LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
1.
After lunching with Mr Royle at Lancaster House on
22 October, Dr Denny Huang told an Evening News reporter that he had urged Mr Royle to agree to elections for members of LegCo. The reporter later contacted Mr Royle to ask for his reactions and we subsequently passed an on-the-record statement to the reporter through News Department.
2.
In the end the Evening News used neither the story nor the statement, deeming them of insufficient interest to their readers. I have, however, suggested privately to Dr Huang (who also incidentally appeared in the recent Granada programme on corruption in Hong Kong) that we would have been glad to have been consulted before he talked to the press. M. Rayk
late, made the same point to D. Huang
more forciltly.
