Security
13. Thank you for the copy of your minute on security dated 27 February. I have copied this to our Security Department who are responsible for liaising with the sponsor department and the post concerned where they think that this is necessary. It would be very helpful to them to know if you envisaged any need to take classified telegrams or papers out of the Chancery building, to Ministers, PS's or officials in the Peking Hotel, Exhibition site or anywhere else. Classified papers must of course be kept overnight or when not in use, in the Embassy safe-keep. As you know, any discussions, dictation or typing classified confidential or above involves special arrangements being made in Chancery.
Transport
14.
Our normal practice for overseas Ministerial meetings, is to allocate motor cars to individuals as from the airport meet and wherever possible keep to it throughout the stay. We do not yet know how many cars the Chinese will provide, but, particularly for the Peking stay, it will be most helpful if you could agree an allocation for the DTI members of the Delegation so that I can put it to the Chinese (the latter were generous and co-operative about cars when we visited Peking last autumn). A very rough allocation might be:-

67
Passengers
Mr and Mrs Walker
Mr and Mrs Heseltine
Mr and Mrs Lewando and ? Mr Woolley
Mr Berry Mr Caine 8

Mr Lane
Mr Grant
Mr Mason
Mr Corley
There would be separate arrangements for Mrs Walker and Mrs Heseltine when they undertake their own programme(s). We find that our Head of News Department usually needs a car to himself, as his movements usually vary from those of the rest of the Delegation and so I have suggested one car for Mr Grant alone.
Newspapers
16. We agreed to make the best arrangements possible for a set of the British daily newspapers each for Mr Walker, Mr Heseltine and Mr Grant at each of the posts to be visited, plus spares for Advisers.
