HK told:
Count your blessings
Open By Stuart White
HONGKONG should stop listing its problems and start counting its blessings.
That was the message today
from two British MP's winding up a week-long fact-finding
tour.
Mr Robert Elliot and Mr Walter Clegg. both Conservatives, have spent the week in an exhaustive meet-the- people tour. chatting to residents, policemen, civil scrvants and Government- officials.
Before they left for England they told me in an exclusive interview that it was about time people in Hongkong put their faith in themselves and the Government and topped knocking one of the most prosperous cities in Asia.
On corruption Mr Clegg said: "I'm convinced,” that the Government at the highest level is absolutely determined to root out corruption no matter who it involves and how long it takes. It amazes me that there is so much cynicism.
"I can assure people here that every single citizen of the United Kingdom has every desire to see Godber returned to Hongkong. But we are a society which is ruled by law and we must abide by law"
On housing Mr Elliot said: "There is a vast problem here. but it's important to remember that any large and high density city such as New York or London has similar problems. Both Mr Clegg and myself were terribly impressed by the determination and expertise of the people working on this į problem." said Mr Elliot,
Mr Clegg finished: "It's time people here stopped knocking Hongkong and started believing in themselves and making the place a better city for everyone to live in."
