VISIT OF THE ANGLO-CHINESE PARLIAMENTARY GROUP TO CHINA: 1-17 NOVEMBER 1973
1. The conversation lasted about one hour and was wide-ranging
and discursive. One of the main points which all the merbers
wished to make was their gratitude towards the Embassy in Peking.
The staff had been first class; several members said that the
Embassy had served them better than any other British Embassy
they had come across. They singled out for particular praise
the Ambassador, Mr John Boyd, and Mr Derek March.
2. The delegation had had 21 hours talk with the Vice Minister
of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ho Ying. They had left notes on this
meeting with the Embassy. The Chinese had been very interested
in our views on the arms limitation talks in Vienna. Ho Ying
had made an important new point about Japan. He had said that
American forces should leave the West Pacific and Japan; Japan
should develop her own defence forces. The Embassy had said
this was the first they had heard of this particular line.
