Anti-British feeling over Detective police chief in Hongkong owned

Mr Tom Pendry, Labour MP for Stalybridge. who has returned from a four-week visit to hongkong, deeply disturbed by a rising tide of anti-British feeling, wants to see the Foreign Secretary,

Alec Douglas-Home.

Sir

He is urging that Scotland Yard should carry out an inves- tigation into the case of the former Hongkong police chief, Mr Peter Godber, who left the colony when wanted for ques- tioning under the Prevention of Bribery ordinances and has not returned. He is now living in Sussex.

By our Political Staff

Pendry is apprehensive that feeling over the case might set off wider troubles.

Mr Pendry will tell Sir Alee that Scotland Yard should be called in to deal with the specific issue of the Godber case. He is not advocating any general inquiry into the Hong, kong police. He feels this would raise the standing of the force in the colony at a time when it suffers from a lack of public esteem and would lift the morale of the force itself.

this is not a matter for Sir Alec it is one he will seek to

raise with appropriate Mini- sters.
