The Chinese also deleted a passage from the report on Telecommunications referring to a coaxial cable sea route connecting Tokyo- Shanghai-Hong Kong-Manila-Bangkok and Singapore. They also deleted a reference to bilateral studies for some of these routes having been undertaken by Japan, China, the U.K. and Australia, together with the recommendation that information and data from those studies be made available to a proposed ECAFE feasi- bility survey team. It is not clear why the Chinese made these deletions, but it is possible that the Shanghai-Hong Kong link or the China - U.K. study could be deemed to undermine. their position vis-a-vis Hong Kong's status. (See paragraph 22 on page 10 of Part II-9(a).
