24TH SESSION OF WHO REGIONAL COMMITTEE FOR THE WESTERN PACIFIC
In Nigel Wenban-Smith's absence in Geneva I
am replying to your letter FAO 223/186/01 of
18 June.
2. We feel strongly that a United Kingdom
representative should be present at this Conference
in Wellington as it might well be embarrassing
vis-à-vis the Chinese if the sole UK representative
came from Hong Kong. However it is clearly not
for the FCO to consider sending a delegate from
London to a Conference like this, and I would
hope that, given Dr Kilgour's likely presence
in the area at the time, your travel budget would
be able to cover his attendance. If this proves
impossible we are quite prepared to ask a member
of our High Commission in New Zealand to attend
the meeting, although you will, I am sure, agree
that this will be neither easy nor appropriate.
