HONG KONG FEDERATION OF STUDENTS: THE 'KNOW CHINA' MOVEMENT
1. The Hong Kong Federation of Students write to Mr Royle
fairly regularly on such issues as the death penalty, the
Godber case, Chinese as an official language etc. Mr Royle
may therefore be interested to read a background report of a
new trend in student activities, which is being promoted by
the Federation and its affiliates. This is a movement designed
to generate an awareness of China within local and post-
secondary student circles, called the 'Know China' Movement'
2. The method chosen to develop this new awareness and
knowledge of China has apparently taken the form of activities
such as photographic and cultural exhibitions, books and
scientific displays, visits to China, public meetings etc.
The extent to which the students' interest and activities have
been fostered by communists in Hong Kong is not at present lata ~ known but much of the enthusiasm shown is considered to be

spontaneous. The fact that young people in Hong Kong are now
showing an increased interest in China is understandable and
in many respects inevitable given China's new prestige and
international standing and the fact that the expiry of the
lease in 1997 will take place within their working lifetime.
