It is indeed our honour to be here as guest of the Hong Kong Government

on the occasion of the inauguration of the British Industrial Exhibition.

It is always a pleasure to come back to Hong Kong. Everyone returning

here must be impressed by the striking developments that have taken place

within a few years. Everywhere one sees new factories, offices and housing.

Much has been done in the field of public services to improve the quality of

Crown life for those living in this, the most heavily-populated of the new: Colonies.

The cross-harbour tunnel, which I shall have have had the honour of

opening, is just one example of this. I hear that Hong Kong is about to embark on still more ambitious projects - notably the largest desalination

plant in the world, and an underground railway system covering over 30 miles.

Naturally, British industry is keenly interested in these developments und

welcomes this opportunity, at a particularly significant point in Hong Kong's

expansion, to demonstrate its ability to contribute to the realisation of these plans. It already has extremely close and long-standing links with

the Hong Kong market, and many of the firms exhibiting here today have played

I am sure that all the firms concerned are keen to continue and strengthen

the tradition of co-operation that has already been built up.

It gives me great pleasure therefore to declare open the British Industrial
