We spoke in September about the possibility
that you might take Her Royal Highness Princess.
Alexandra on an unofficial visit to China in July
1973.
I am writing now to say that after reflecting
on the course of the Foreign and Commonwealth
Secretary's visit there last month, I have come to the conclusion that the summer of 1973 might well
be a little premature for a visit by you and the
Princess. Although our own visit went very well
it became clear that the Chinese were content to let
the exchanges of high level visits between ourselves
develop at a fairly leisurely pace. It therefore looks as though the summer of 1974, or even later, might be a better time to propose to them for a
visit by the Princess.
I hope this will not be too much of a
disappointment to Her Royal Highness.
We were
all deeply grateful for her enthusiastic response
to the original suggestion.
