I am here today in my capacity as the ex-Chairman of the Health
Education Select Committee, which has now been absorbed into the Environ-
mental Hygiene Select Committee, in an effort to integrate our work and
avoid duplication of effort.
At the present, this Committee might be called the propoganda
machine of our work in Public Health, an effort to educate the public on
health matters, such as:
propoganda:
Protection of Eyesight
Prevention of mosquitoes, flies, rats Food hygiene, at home and in restaurants,
and danger of diseases caused by lack of care in food and water.
I would like to tell you something about how we carry out this
Work among the Young
As our work is educational, we work closely with the Edcuation
Department in trying to influence young people. Every year we arrange speech
and song contests among schools, on topics connected with health and hygiene.
As the children prepare their speeches, they are learning quite a lot about the
subject. They do a lot of research, and in making their speeches, they share
this information with their schoolmates and other listeners. In t'is way we
hope and believe
that many young people become cleanliness-conscious.
recent years these competitions have been sponsored by the Jaycees, who have
taken an active part in organising, as well as presenting handsome prizes to
the winners.
