I thought it might be useful for you to have on file a note of the value of Rediffusion (Hong Kong) Limited to the British economic interest.
Taking the figures for the year 1971 as a fairly representative example, the company spent with British suppliers £468,000 on equipment, supplies, television sets, vehicles and services. (including £55,000 on BBC and other television material) and paid £60,000 to British carriers.
The British economic interest also gained about £550,000 pre-tax profit and so you will see that the minimum value to Britain of our enterprise in Hong Kong runs at about £1,078,000 for one year.
Of course there are many other incidental benefits, which I make no attempt to enumerate or evaluate, although they must be significant.
As we have been, and propose to be, in business in Hong Kong for many years, the long term benefits to Britain of our operations in Hong Kong are of value.
