Rediffusion to bid for new TV station

Rediffusion (Hongkong) Ltd announced yesterday that it bad formed a consortium of local commercial interests to bid for the new wireless tele- vision franchise.

Rediffusion's television ser vice, the first to be estab lished in Hongkong, began in 1957 offering Chinese and English programmes subscribers through its cable system.

For HK-TVB, the Managing Director, Mr Andrew Eu, said his company was not quite keen On the second station announced by Government on Tuesday.

A Rediffusion spokesman said the assets of the consortium would consist of a substantial part of the existing assets of the two programme television service already in operation, plus the transmitting equipment and additional studio equipment which would be needed for the new off air service.

The twofold aim of the station would be, firstly, to provide, within 12 months of the award of the licence, a comprehensive programme service enabling a high percentage of viewers to enjoyį good reception from the commencement of trans missions.
