1. Thank you very much foryour letter of 24 February (AUS(CF)/7576) about the Snake Fence. I am very interested to read that you were advised by the Command Secretary in Hong Kong that the Hong Kong Government were under the impressio that the FCO were going to meet the cost of the Fence. I wonder if you would be kind enough to let us have a copy of the Command Secretary's report. It would be particularly interesting to know who in the Hong Kong Gover ment gave him this impression. If the Command Secretary's communication was in 1967 I presume it referred to the Commonwealth Office rather than to the FCO, but this will no doubt emerge if you can send us a copy of the communication.
2. We are in the meantime looking urgently into the matter in the light of your letter and will let you know also about rossible arbitration by the Treasury.
