1.

DORMANT COMMISSION

Her Majesty The Queen has now approved the termination

of the Dormant Commission.

2. Sir Leslie Monson may now wish to write to Mr Nairne in

response to the request in paragraph 2 of the latter's letter

of 31 December. A draft is attached for this purpose.

3.

Thereafter we shall need to inform the Governor that the

Commission has been terminated and ask him to withdraw the

original from the Commander, British Forces, and return it to

us together with the copy in the Governor's own possession.

4. Legal Advisers have recommended that this would most

appropriately be done by formal despatch. A draft is attached

which embodies terms suggested by Legal Advisers.

Since this

matter has already been to Ministers and is now a formality

I suggest that the despatch can issue over the Secretary of

State's facsimile signature.

5. We have arranged with the Ministry of Defence to coordinate

with them on the timing of the issue of the despatch to ensure

that the Commander British Forces receives prior warning from

the Chief of the Defence Staff of the Governor's request for

the return of the Commission.
