One side effect, as it were, of the amount of time devoted to activities

outside the classroom is that it takes care of the children for many hours when a

harrassed working mother would otherwise be unable to cope. Children from communist

schools spend less time playing on the streets, while both parents are out at work,

than many others. Meals are obtainable at almost all communist schools and the

willingness of the teachers to spend time after school and during the holidays in

activities with the children means that the schools provide something of a social

service quite apart from their educational role.

Visits to China

The

Students and staff members of communist schools are subjected to intensive

indoctrination during frequent visits to China. These visits range from one day

trips to Shum Chun to extensive tours of more remote places such as Yenan and Shao

Shan, Hunan Province (MAO's birthplace), two places which equate to Mecca in the

eyes of Chinese communist followers. Trips have been made to Peking, Shanghai,

Nanking and, of course, to Canton and other places in Kwangtung Province.

trips were suspended when the cultural revolution was at its height but they have

been resumed since 1968 and are now taking place with increasing frequency. They

more often than not, subsidised and provide an opportunity for the visitors

from Hong Kong to see China under the most favourable circumstances; there is

little doubt that they develop the enthusiasm of the visitors through collective

group effort (an essential and subtle principle of communist indoctrination).

Participants return fired with enthusiasm for what they have seen and ready to

devote their lives to spreading the MAO gospel.
