"MAO Thought for the day". English usually consists of translations of MAO's
works from Chinese into English and vice-versa. Chinese literature is devoted,
of course, to revolutionary works while Geography and liistory invariably
degenerate into tirades against the "wicked imperialists" for the "unequal
treaties" forced upon China. Politics are even brought into Mathematics, students
having to calculate the percentage improvement in the output of various factories
in China or the percapita improvement in food consumption in China today compared
with the "bad old days". Music and drama lessons, as might be expected, use
revolutionary opera and drama for reference material.

The examination paper. set at the end of each term provide an illuminat-
ing insight into the type and standard of indoctrination given to students during
the preceding term. Thus, in a recent Chinese language examination at the Hon Wall
Middle School, students were offered the choice of the folowing subjects for their
essays:-

What preliminary understanding do you have after
studying the Political Report given by Vice-Chairman
LIN at the 9th Party Congress of the C.C.P. in April
1969? (note: this question is hardly topical at
present) or
(b) The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution is
completely necessary and a very timely revolution.
