(b) Reducing the danger of political difficulties in our
relations with countries in a position to cause this
(i) Kenya; We have provided some £23m since 1961 to
enable the Kenya Government to buy up the farms of
British settlers in the White Highlands.
(ii) St Kitts and Anguilla; The firm commitment of
aid funds in 1971 for the purpose of building a new airport
in St Kitts was the principal means by which the St Kitts
Government was induced to acquiesce ex post facto in
the administration of Anguilla by Britain. This also made
it possible to withdraw all British troops and police from
Anguilla.
(c) Helping to secure an improvement in relations
(i)
Indonesia; We introduced and rapidly developed an
aid programme to Indonesia after the period of confronta-
tion with Malaysia.
(ii)
Yemen Arab Republic; We provided food aid to the
Yemen shortly after our recognition in 1971.
(iii) Bangladesh; Our rapid provision of substantial
capital aid has reinforced the favourable political
climate towards Britain in Bangladesh, which had been
fostered by our political stance in 1971.

Middle East. In particular we give large amounts of aid
