Purposes of the Secretary of State's Visit

4. The Secretary of State's purpose in visiting

China will be:

(a) to make clear the importance Her Majesty's

Government attach to consolidating, and

building on, the improvement in relations

with the Chinese People's

and to

maintaining the momentum in contacts and

exchanges with them;

(In confidential discussions)

(b) to continue the exchange of views on subjects

of mutual concern begun in the talks betweer

Mr Royle and Mr Ch'iao Kuan-hua, and to

obtain from the Chincse an account of their

interests and objectives in the world;

(c) to explain British policies in areas where

we and the Chinese have been pursuing

different objectives, eg Bangladesh and

Korea;
