they wish to cover the Secretary of State's visit to China.

Total numbers may be between 20 and 24. This will depend to

a considerable extent on whether it would be possible for the

Chinese to make arrangements for the journalists to see something

of the country in conjunction with the visit. (The journalists

will have to meet the costs of their travel to and from China;

some of those who would wish to accompany the Secretary of State

have inuicated that they would only be able to go to China if

they wore able to stay longer than 4 days and see parts of the

country outside Peking.) llows Department are in touch with the

Chinese Embassy here and will see what can be arranged. It is

not proposed that the journalists should be rogarded as forming

part of the Becretary of State's party.
