(i) Aircraft

The Ministry of Defence confirm that an MF VC 10 will be
at the Secretary of State's disposal from 27 October - November.
It will be fitted with bunks for the Secretary of State and Lady
Douglas-lomo and VI fit for the rest of the party.
7. The Ministry of Defence have said they would be content for
the aircraft to remain at leking during the visit and not return
to liong Kong; the runway at ilong Yong will be under repair at
the time end will not be available throughout the day.
(ii) Route
8. In order to minimise fatigue the Secretary of State night
prefer to fly Vestabout on both outward and return journeys
The Ministry of Defence have told us that the range of their
VC 10s will not permit a non-stop flight from Elmendorf (naar
Anchorage, Alaska) Jeking/Shanghai. A 11 hours stopover at
Shemya in the best loutians will be required. This would
entail a minimum flying time of 243 hours. This would mean
that the outward route would be london Airport

9. It would be desirable to avoid a stopover on Japanese
territory on the outward journey; on the return journey stops
should be confined to airports at British bases.
