The Foreign Secretary and Lady Douglas-Home this (Monday) afternoon

paid a visit to the Kwai Hing Government Low-Cost Housing Estate at Kwai Chung.

They were accompanied on the visit by the Governor, Sir Murray MacLehose.

On arrival they were met by the Commissioner for Housing Mr. Donald

Liao, the Chief Housing Manager, Mr. D.I. McIntosh, and the Housing Manager of

Kwai Hing Estate, Mr. Chu Chai-kuen.

They were first taken on a tour through the estate, which has a

population of 18,000. Mr. Liao explained to the visitors the living conditions

of the residents.

The visitors walked through the estate's market place, where the

Foreign Secretary took a keen interest in a fish stall and a general food stall.

Sir Alec stopped to talk to the keepers of these stalls.

Continuing the tour, the visitors paid a surprise visit to two flats

on the first floor of Block Two.

They went into Flat 230, where Mrs. Wong Sair-kin lives with her

husband, three children and Mr. Wong's mother. Mrs. Wong offered tea to the

distinguished guests. She told the Foreign Secretary that her husband is a plumber.

Next the visitors saw Mr. Chan Ying, who is a printer. He lives in

Flat 227 together with his wife, his mother and one son who is studying in Wah

Yan College.

The Foreign Secretary and Lady Douglas-Home showed a keen interest in

the living habits of the estate's residents, and asked many questions on their

daily activities.
