Sir Alec Douglas-Home was afforded a bird's eye view of one of

Hong Kong oldest and most congested resettlement estates during his visit

to Kowloon today.

Sir Alec, accompanied by Lady Douglas-Home and the Governor, Sir

Murray MacLehose, flew by helicopter to a newly completed section of

Nam Cheong Street which overlooks Shek Kip Mei Resettlement Estate.

He was met there by the Commissioner for Resettlement Mr. Ian

Lightbody who briefed the Foreign Secretary on the estate with its 50,000

tenants.

Mr. Lightbody also told Sir Alec about the proposed conversion of

Shek Kip Mei into more spacious living accomodation with proper commercial

and recreational facilities.

A model of the conversion scheme was on display on the hillside

and Sir Alec was able to see for himself the Shek Kip Mei of today and

the one of the future.

Mr. Colin Bramwell the Government Architect responsible for

disigning the new Shek Kip Mei, was also on hand at the briefing.
