LADY DOUGLAS-HOME VISITS QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL

********

Lady Douglas-Home spent close to one hour this morning touring

the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kowloon. She was accompanied on her

visit by Lady MacLehose.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital is one of the largest and most up-to-date

hospitals in Asia. It has over 1,500 beds in 46 public wards and is

staffed by more than 150 doctors, 950 nurses, technicians and male orderlies

and about 500 amahs.

Lady Douglas-Home and party arrived at the hospital about 11.10 a.m.

and were met by the Director of Medical and Health Services, Dr. Gerald Choa,

the Deputy Director, Dr. C.O. Lee, Chief Nursing Officer, Miss E.C. Wallace,

Senior Hospital Secretary, Mr. R.A. Willsher, and the Acting Superintendent,

Dr. Benjamin Ho.

She and her party first visited the maternity ward and nursery

where they were met by Dr. H. Abdullah, Medical Specialist, and Miss

Dorothy Wong, nursing officer in charge of the ward.

Lady Douglas-Home asked Dr. Abdullah about the RH negative problem

among births and was told that there was a less frequent occurrence of such

cases in Hong Kong as compared to the United Kingdom.

Being greeted with the loud cries of new born babies on entering

the nursery, Lady Douglas-Home remarked "very angry babies".

Her next stop was the paediatric Surgical Ward where she was met

by Dr. S.F. Lam, Orthopaedic Specialist, and Mrs. M. Whiteley, nursing officer

in charge.
