Many thanks for your letter of 8 June about an autumn visit.
We have now put together a tentative programme (I enclose a copy of the detailed schedule) which would give Mr. Royle from the evening of 10 November until the morning of 15 November in Hong Kong. I realise that this is pretty soon after the Secretary of State's visit, so please say if you would find it inconveniently early.
The Secretary of State has approved. Mr. Royle's proposed itinerary in principle, but has some reservations about the need for a visit by Mr. Royle to Hong Kong so soon after the Prime Minister and himself. I have explained that Mr. Royle's pre-occupations in Hong Kong would be rather different from those of the Prime Minister or the Secretary of State to Johnny Graham, but I think it would be very helpful if you could find time to set out precisely why you would hope for a further visit by Mr. Royle in the autumn and the various topics which you would like to go over with him.
Sir Murray MacLehose, K.C.M.G.,
HONG KONG,
D. B. C. Logan Private Secretary to Anthony Royle
