Post-secondary college students

In this category are students from the various post-secondary colleges the larger of which are (a) the Chu Hai College; (b) the Baptist College; (c) the colleges of education and (d) the Technical College.

(a) Some Chu Hai College students tend to have very

extreme views. Because of their comparatively inferior academic standard, particularly their standard of English, they usually find it very difficult upon completion of their studies to find employment which will yield a salary in any way comensurate with their aspirations. As teachers in private schools their salaries can be as low as $600.00 a month, whilst if they work for the Chinese press, including the more reputable papers, their salaries can be even lower. They therefore feel that they are being discriminated against by the Establishment.

To them the status quo offers no future. It will be recalled that some of the students expelled by the Chu Hai College authorities in 1969 later joined the staff of the radical "70's Bi-weekly". It appears that the more radical students all identify their future with the Chinese motherland though not necessarily with the present regime, and their thinking is becoming more and more dominated by patriotic sentiments.

(b) Most students from the Baptist college are

less dominated by patriotic sentiments. Compared with Chu Hai students their concern and dissatisfaction are more parochial being very much orientated towards Hong Kong and even college issues. Though sensitive to the alleged social inequality in Hong Kong, they are even more conscious of their inferior status vis-a-vis students at the two universities.

(c) & (a)

Students in the colleges of education and in in the Technical College tend to be even narrower in outlook - they seldom express in- terest in the broader issues concerning Hong Kong society.

Group D: Returned students, including those teaching in

universities and secondary schools, and holiday students

The majority of students or teachers in this category received their primary education, and some their secondary

education/...
