Re: Arrests of students in Hong Kong

Your ref:

Our ref: HHS/6784 Date: Sept. 26, 1972

Dear Sirs,

*

HERT

REF.

16)

Our organization, the World Federalist Youth, has been frequently in contact with the Hong Kong Federation of Students.

Recently we have been receiving information about the arrest of ten students of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, among whom was their President, by the police in Hong Kong. Over hundred residents of Yan Yi Resite Village were arrested as well during demonstrations (sit-ins) for resettlement of the village residents which, according to our information, had been promised by the government four years ago. The demonstrations were said to have been entirely peaceful, but were termed "illegal assembly" and therefore arrests were made. The events took place on Sept. 4, 1972.

World Federalist Youth would appreciate it if we could get information from your office as to what happened exactly and why this peaceful protest was a criminal offense.

Looking forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience,

Yours Sincerely,

Haritie Horak

Henriette Horák (Mrs.) Acting Executive Secretary.
