RD 141/72 (125)

8th September 1972

Sir,

In view of the understandable concern over the case of the Yan Yee villa Rublic I should like to explain why the In Ice villagers have been living where they are for zoveral years and why it has been necessary to offer thon resettlement early next year rather than immediately.

2.

Cvor the last 20 years Government has provided permanent housing to over 40, of the population of Hong kong at renta which are about 1/5th to 1/3rd of the rent they would have to pay for similar accommodation in privately-owned buildings. Doopite this enormous Lousing effort ito cheapness still stimulates a big demand for housing which we are trying to satisfy.

3.

The housing is produced by two bodies cubsidised by the Government: the Housing Authority end the Hong Kong ilousing Society, and also by the ublic works Department.

The housing produced by the Public Works Department is mainly for homeless people who have to be resettled but none of it is allocated to families of at least 4 persons with an inccne of $500 or below per month who are unsatisfactorily housed, on application. There is a waiting list of opplicants that represents about half a million people.
