Dear Mr. Royle,
Re: Composition of the Hong Kong
Legislative Council
We have met on several occasions, but I do
not think you will recall these. I am better known to Charles Fletcher-Cooke, and of course Peter Blaker, for whose family I have acted as Legal Adviser in Hong Kong. I am an individual member of the Hong Kong Association, which I joined soon after its formation. I have pinned to the page of this letter an extract from last year's Hong Kong Directory to identify myself. This is not complete, and at the last count I was on the Boards of just under 10% of the public companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
I have heard that certain changes in the composition of the Legislative Council are under consideration, and that these include the abolition of the seats traditionally reserved for the nominee of the Unofficial Justices of the Peace and the representative of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce. The ground being advanced for these changes is presumably that our relations with China require that there should be no representation as such
