RECENT MINISTERIAL VISITS
1. My right honourable Friend the Chancellor of the Duchy of
Lancaster and my honourable Friend the Parliamentary Under
Mc Royle,
Secretary of State, have both visited Hong Kong in recent months.

2. I have nothing to add to the reply given by my honourable
Friend the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in his reply
to a question by the Honourable Member on the 7th of December.
HOUSING
3. Housing has been one of the greatest problems the Hong Kong
Government have had to face since the end of the war.
The popu-
lation of the Colony in 1945 was 600,000; it is now well over
(wholly)
four million. This is not the result of natural increase. It
is estimated that about two million have come from China to the
Colony since the war. This is what has posed an almost insoluble
problem to the Government of Hong Kong. However, during the
past 16 years the Government have spent over HK $750 million on
resettlement housing alone. Including other forms of Govern-
ment and Government-aided housing they have provided accommodatio
