SECRET
MINISTERIAL VISITS TO HONG KONG 1972
1.

R
I attach a copy of Mr Graham's minute of 26 October to
Mr Mayall about the projected visit by the Secretary of State
26
to Hong Kong in February 1972. I also attach a copy of a minute
that I have sent to Mr Mayall on the same subject.
2. Mr Logan told me this morning that if the Secretary of
State visits Hong Kong in February then Mr Royle would propose to go there some time in March (Sir Murray MacLeho se would welcome
a visit at that time). However, Mr Logan agrees that if Mr Wood
is unable to visit Hong Kong in April for the opening of the Science Centre, Mr Royle might be willing to defer his visit
until that month.
3. Sir Leslie Monson wrote to Sir Michael Walker on 9 September
about the projected visit by Mr Wood but has as yet had no reply
to his letter. I spoke to Mr Wood's office yesterday and they
said that the Minister had been away from his office so much
recently that he had not yet had time to deal with the matter.
They therefore expected that a few more days would elapse before Sir M. Walker
he would be able to reply. It seems therefore that we can
take this matter no further for the moment.
4.
Since the Acting Governor will shortly be receiving a telegram about the projected visit by the Secretary of State in February, it might be advisable to write to Sir Hugh Norman- Walker in response to his letter to Sir Leslie of 7 June simply to let him know how matters stand with regard to Ministerial
/attendance
