the maximum frequency attainable and requires a very high degree of control over train movements, passenger handling, access to trains and loading/unloading. Semi-automatic control of train movements and signalling is recommended of the type now normal on new lines in London, Paris, Tokyo and a number of other cities. Once the driver has started the train, the automatic control system performs all the accelerating, decelerating and braking functions required to take the train to the next station. The signal and control equipment is capable of processing headways as low as 90 seconds.
TRAIN POWER
21.
Trains will be electrically driven and the power will be drawn from the two power companies' main supply at selected points through the system's sub-stations and distrib-ted to the trains in the form of 1,500 volts direct current by means of a third rail.
TRAINS MISCELLANEOUS

It is recommended that the system should have only one class of travel partly because there seems to be no social justification for instituting differences between passengers and, more important, because. a single-class system greatly simplifies the design of stations and passenger handling facilities while ensuring the maximum use of trains
with inter-communicating cars.
23.
STATIONS
No smoking would be allowed on trains or platforms.
24.
Passenger Handling.
Stations have been designed wherever possible to provide "centre-island" platforms between the lines as this is the most efficient for speedy passenger handling. For the same reason the system provides for the physical separation of arriving and departing passengers so far as this is practicable.

Fare Collection. Investigations carried out in the Further Study indicate that it may be advantageous if automatic fare collection equipment is installed from the beginning as it gives an overwhelming financial saving compared with manual methods of collection. The only thing that could affect this proposal would be a decision by the operating authority to introduce a greatly simplified fare structure and random checkings of tickets or possibly to dispense with tickets
entirely.
26.
Ventilation. The ventilation of the stations, tunnels and cars has been planned to give a satisfactory environment both initially and
later when heavier traffic develops. The Final Report proposes measures which will provide adequate control of temperature and humidity. The basis of the proposals is to blow a supply of air at outside temperature
