HOUSING BOARD REPORT 1970
Recommends Housing One Million People Over Next Six Years
In its illustrated report for 1970 tabled in the Legislative Council
today, the Housing Board says that at the end of March 1970, almost 1.7 million
people or over 40 per cent of the total population were housed in accommodation
provided by Government or Government-aided agencies.
"Despite very considerable achievements in providing housing over
the years there is still a long way to go before the aim of providing each
family with self-contained permanent accommodation can be met."
Plans are underway to provide new housing for over one million people
in the next six years.
The Board recommends that the Government housing programmes should
aim to provide for over 560,000 people during the six years and estates now
being built by the Housing Authority and Housing Society will provide for
120,000 in the same period. In addition, the private sector is likely to
produce housing for at least 360,000 people by 1976.
The Government housing programme up to 1976 will virtually exhaust
all the large scale suitable sites in the urban areas and, if further
improvement in housing conditions is to be achieved after that the new towns
at Castle Peak, Kwai Chung and Sha Tin would have to be developed to meet
the housing need.
