ordinary member of the local Chinese population, and feel what it is like. to "know that the ultimate responsibility for change and for the aleviation of every injustice, every shortcoming, every evil in your society belongs not to you, and your representatives, but to some remote, unknown foreigners on the other side of the world. If you could experience this at first hand, and know the feeling of the pointlessness of life that it brings to every socially conscious being, then we venture to think, Sir, that you, too, would join the ranks of the "enthusiasts", whom, by implication, you criticise for speaking without true knowledge of the
