Thank you for your letter of 11 October
concerning promotions to the Supreme and District
Court Benches.
I read your cousin's letter with interest
but regret to say that the Secretary of State,
who makes these appointments, cannot give any
undertaking as to how future vacancies on the
Supreme and District Court Benches will be filled.
Mr Litton's views, which are the same as those of
the Hong Kong Bar Association will, however, be
kept in mind.
